Veterinary staff working on patient

In cybersecurity circles, there’s a famous rule called the principle of least privilege. The basic gist of this rule is that users should only have the minimum level of permissions needed to perform their job. In other words, you should only have access to the data, software, and resources you need to do your work. If you don’t need ‘em, you can’t access ‘em.

On the surface, this might all sound a bit stingy but limiting access to resources really can go a long way towards maintaining data integrity and reducing the risk of human error - and it’s a similar story when it comes to your practice management software.

Read on to learn more about how ezyVet’s role-based permissions can help you stay in control of your veterinary practice without impeding your team’s ability to work efficiently.

What are role-based permissions?

As an all-in-one practice management solution, ezyVet offers an incredibly broad range of features, from online booking to inventory management and everything in between. But does every member of your team need to be able to access every single of those features? Probably not.

That’s where role-based permissions come in. As the name suggests, role-based permissions are a way of configuring the permissions of your ezyVet users based on their role within the practice. It’s an effective system for limiting user access and ensuring that staff can only utilize the specific tools and resources that they genuinely need in order to perform their job function.

A practice manager, for example, probably doesn’t need to write clinical notes or edit a patient’s medical history, but they do need to be able to take care of invoices and set up new products. Similarly, veterinarians may not need to process purchase orders, but they do need to be able to perform a physical exam and make diagnostics requests.

How to set up role-based permissions in ezyVet

With ezyVet, you can easily define who can access specific resources within your practice. There are hundreds of permissions you can configure, allowing you to manage your team according to the unique needs of the practice and specify exactly which features, tools, and resources each role can and can’t access.

If you don’t want to spend time building your roles from scratch, we also offer a bunch of preconfigured recommended templates built around common roles and tasks in the veterinary workplace. You can use these templates as a starting point to make your own custom-built roles. Find them under Admin > Users/Resources > All. For more inspiration, check out this list of recommended permissions for each role.

Once the role has been created, you can quickly apply the role to a team member, granting them the applicable permissions. There’s no limit on the number of people that can be assigned to each role, giving you the freedom to shape your permissions to perfectly fit your teams and workflows.
